James H. Bennett Jr.'s Passion For Medical Devices

James H. Bennett Jr. has always had a passion for medical devices, especially those that directly improve patient’s quality of life. While he was a high school student, James Bennett interned at a company where he worked to fabricate, modify, and repair prosthetic and orthotic devices. He continued pursuing this interest while he was a student at Bucknell University where he became the president of the e-NABLE club that designed, developed, and 3D printed custom simple prosthetics for children with upper arm disabilities located near the Lewisburg, Pennsylvania area. After graduating from Bucknell University, James Bennett became a student at Cornell University earning his Master’s of Biomedical Engineering degree and led a five-person engineering team to develop a robotic mobility device for toddlers with mobility impairments. The WeeBot medical device venture was targeted at helping these children with mobility disabilities in the greater Ithaca and Syracuse regions.

Later, James Bennett expanded his focus beyond the engineering side of medical device development to include the business strategy and marketing aspects through working as an MBA Consultant with Boston Scientific during his MBA program at Cornell University. In this position, he was charged with the responsibility of identifying opportunities in the surgical robotics space, particularly in urology, through in-depth market research and conducting interviews with physicians. He designed research tools, gathered clinical insights, and evaluated competitive and market landscapes to validate unmet needs. Specifically, James Bennett was investigating what unmet needs and market opportunities there were during the Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy procedure, a surgical procedure that assaults kidney stones with lasers to break up and remove them, that could be addressed through surgical robotic devices. James Bennett collaborated with experts across regulatory, clinical, and technological domains, which allowed him to refine comprehensive business case recommendations into simple and actionable strategies and present them to senior stakeholders.

Today, James Bennett has continued following his passion for medical devices as he serves as a Global Product Manager at Baxter in the Syracuse region, where he leads strategy for connected patient monitoring technologies. His responsibilities include overseeing product development, product launch planning, and conducting market analysis to support lifecycle management and identify new business opportunities. In addition, James Bennett evaluates new business opportunities by analyzing target markets, emerging technologies, customer needs, and competitive dynamics.
